20 books of summer

I started this late and haven’t managed to read as much as I would like, but still got two months to go where I can catch up hopefully. 9 books each month is do-able, although I have been reading a few other books that I have needed to read too, hopefully less that that soon. This month I have managed to read 2 books, not great but better than 0.

the neverland warsthe silver witch

One I loved one I really didn’t enjoy, but both reviews books that are now reviewed so good progress in my book. I am away on holiday in a few days and probably won’t get much reading done then, too much fun to be had, there’s going to be pools and theme parks and water parks, cannot wait.

Hows your 20 books of summer coming along?

the dursleys

We know that Dudley meets up with Harry sometimes for the sake of their kids, let’s be honest they practically grew up brothers even if they did not get on. So my theory which was the reason I started this post is out the window before I even start, my theory was they got their memories wiped since it is doubtful that Harry would visit them. Oh well.

What do you think happened to them? Did they move back to Privet Drive, or go somewhere new and start again? Other than Dudley did they ever see Harry again? Do they still hate magic? Or has at least Dudley realised that Harry is not the enemy?

I like to think they softened a little towards him and saw him every few years at least. What do you think?

Fantasy Favourites Intro

29 Wednesday Jun 2016

This is hosted by Of Wonderland, the concept is that during the 10th -18th of July, we read only fantasy books. I love fantasy so this is the perfect challenge for. I am just going to be back from holiday when this starts so so I don’t think I will be reading too much. If this seems like your kind of thing, head over and sign up now. But time for the questions.

Who are you?

I am Emma, 28 and live in Scotland. Fantasy is my favourite genre.

Why are you participating in this readathon?

Because it looks fun and I love fantasy, so why not? I get to read books and meet some new bloggers.

Which books do you intend to read?

I don’t really like planning my books, but I will make an exception. I plan to read Revenge is Sweet by Berni Stevens, which is a vampire novel. Dark Touch by Aimee L. Salter, a bit of paranormal. Cogling by Jordan Elizabeh Mierek, a steampunk novel that looks interesting. If I have time I will decide what else to read then. I ahven’t read these before but they are my favourite genre so  they count.

How many pages do you expect to get though?

I will go with the flow and do the same as everyone else seems to be doing, 900 pages, 100 a day. Hopefully I won’t crash and burn.

What’s your favourite thing about the fantasy genre?

There are no boundries other than the authors and readers imagination. I know people hate Twilight but it changed the way we look at vampires. I love how exciting the genre is.

Which fantasy books do you always recommend?

The Study series by Maria V Snyder. The Hex Hall series by Rachel Hawkins. There is probably more but I am getting sleepy and cannot remember.

Which fantasy books are you dying to read?

This is a hard one, I don;t think there are any coming up, pretty sure I have finished all the series I want to or they are not even scheduled yet. I cannot wait for the third book in the Medoran chronicles by Lynette Noni.

Which fantasy would would you visit if you could? (I know it’s hard but try not to say Hogwarts.)

Of course Hogwarts but since I can’t say it, Akarnae world by Lynette Noni. There is just something I love about this world. There’s loads more but I would be forever listing them all.

Well that’s them all, looking forward to starting this. 🙂

1 Star Reviews

I decided to do a series of posts on why I give of the star ratings. Decided to start with the lowest so it can end on a high note.

For the life of me I cannot think of a review to which I have given a 1 star reviews. Even books I have truly hated got a 2 star review. Maybe I am too nice, but I think I give an extra star for drawing me in, in the first place. Or for the hard work. I don’t mind other people giving one star reviews, but everytime I try I chicken out and give it two stars because I don’t want to be mean.

I think I would give one if it was truly terrible but haven’t read any yet or I just haven’t finished them.

Do you give one star reviews? How bad must it be for you to give a one star review?

ARC Review: The Silver Witch

the silver witch

A year after her husband’s sudden death, ceramic artist Tilda Fordwells finally moves into the secluded Welsh cottage that was to be their new home. She hopes that the tranquil surroundings will help ease her grief, and lessen her disturbing visions of Mat’s death. Instead, the lake in the valley below her cottage seems to spark something dormant in her – a sensitivity, and a power of some sort. Animals are drawn to her, electricity shorts out when she’s near, and strangest of all, she sees a new vision; a boatful of ancient people approaching her across the water.

On this same lake in Celtic times lived Seren, a witch and shaman. She was respected but feared, kept separate from the community for her strange looks. When a vision came to her of the Prince amid a nest of vipers she warned of betrayal from one of his own. Prince Brynach both loved and revered her, but could not believe someone close to him wished him harm, even as the danger grew.

In her own time, Tilda’s grief begins to fade beside her newfound powers and a fresh love. When she explores the lake’s ancient magic and her own she discovers Seren, the woman in her vision of the boat. Their two lives strangely mirror each others, suggesting a strong connection between the women. As Tilda comes under threat from a dark power, one reminiscent of Seren’s prophecy, she must rely on Seren and ancient magic if death and disaster are not to shatter her life once more.

I received a free copy of this book via netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

This book was everything I wanted from it and more. It had history explained in an interesting not boring way yet still feeling fully explained for the story purposes. The history kept me hooked, I liked learning with the characters, snippets of information were released like little nuggets of gold, each more adding a little more sense to the story until you have a full golden wonder.

I sometimes struggle with adult paranormal books in our world where the main character has no previous interaction with the paranormal element since most adults would freak if something like that really happens and characters often accept it too readily for my liking. But Tilda and the characters handled it just well enough for me cope, they freaked out a little, but dealt with the issues like adults and tried to put logic to it.

The setting was beautiful, a secluded lake in Wales, it sounded almost mystical. The contrast between the present and the past, it made the setting even more realistic. There is something so serene about a small lake with cottages round about, just makes the setting so idyllic.

The parts about making pots and archeology were really interesting. I loved how it was woven in to the story, not just to fill out the story a little but as integral plot points.

The main thing I didn’t like was how sometimes Tilda would suddenly know a fact or a name that I had no recollection of her finding out, especially where there was no possible way for her to have done so, happened a few times, which did get on my nerves a little.

But with only really one fairly small issue with this book, I think it was a beautifully crafted masterpiece that I recommend anyone who likes historical fiction try.

ARC Review: I’m With Cupid

24 Friday Jun 2016

I'm with Cupid

Marcus is a Cupid. Lena is a Reaper. Opposites attract in the exciting new Switched At First Kiss series by the acclaimed author of The Dirt Diary.

When she’s dared to kiss the adorkable Marcus Torelli at a party, Lena thinks it’s the perfect opportunity to cross First Kiss off her list of “Things to Accomplish Before I Turn Fourteen.”

It’s only when she gets sent on an assignment the next day that she realizes something went horribly wrong. That ZING she felt wasn’t the thrill of her first kiss–she and Marcus have swapped powers! Lena is not your average eighth grader; she’s a soul collector with a serious job to do. And Marcus turns out to be a supernatural matchmaker (like Cupid, but without the diaper).

Now logical Lena finds herself with the love touch, and sweet, sentimental Marcus has death at his fingertips. The truth is that Lena should never have taken that dare…because one little kiss has Lena and Marcus in a whole lotta trouble.

I received a free copy of this book via netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

I found this book quirky and sweet. Lena and Marcus alternated POV’s which was great because you got to see both sides of how the powers were meant to work and how exactly they went wrong. It’s kinda like freaky Friday with powers instead of body swapping.

Lots of havoc was had and the hierarchy of reapers and cupids was interesting, made perfect sense. I did wonder a little how their families didn’t notice they were out all the time since they were still quite young.

I loved how the story unfolded, it was a little juvenile but it suited the story, it was about learning powers, first loves and growing up.

The romance between Lena and Marcus was good since it wasn’t insta-love, they had known each other for a while. It progresses at a good pace with a few bumps that only teenagers can come across.

Overall it was a sweet read and I would carry on the series.

ARC Review: The Neverland Wars

the neverland wars

Magic can do a lot—give you flight, show you mermaids, help you taste the stars, and… solve the budget crisis? That’s what the grown-ups will do with it if they ever make it to Neverland to steal its magic and bring their children home.

However, Gwen doesn’t know this. She’s just a sixteen-year-old girl with a place on the debate team and a powerful crush on Jay, the soon-to-be homecoming king. She doesn’t know her little sister could actually run away with Peter Pan, or that she might have to chase after her to bring her home safe. Gwen will find out though—and when she does, she’ll discover she’s in the middle of a looming war between Neverland and reality.

She’ll be out of place as a teenager in Neverland, but she won’t be the only one. Peter Pan’s constant treks back to the mainland have slowly aged him into adolescence as well. Soon, Gwen will have to decide whether she’s going to join impish, playful Peter in his fight for eternal youth… or if she’s going to scramble back to reality in time for the homecoming dance.

I received a free copy of this book via netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

If you read my reviews regularly you will know I hate giving bad reviews, I find it really difficult and hate saying bad things about someone’s hard work but unfortunately this is one of these times where I got to just try to write what I feel.

I am not sure how to put it politely, but this book bored me, not one bit of it interested me, I felt like I was trudging through just to finish so I wouldn’t have to read anymore. I just want to point out that I had a look on goodreads and most people enjoyed this book, I seem to be in the minority who didn’t like this book. I suppose not everyone can like every book.

Books with magic should be exciting and full of wonder, this had explained and technical magic, without explaining anything at all. It’s about a young girl who just doesn’t want to grow up, but instead showing this it was explained and it felt jarring to the story. It’s only saving grace was that it was set in Neverland, which is what drew me in, in the first place. I felt like nothing happened in the story, it was all just filler with no action.

Peter wasn’t exactly what I expected, he was untrusting and too childish and too adult at the same time, his character was too much of an oxymoron for me. I just felt like he was juvenile, yet in charge of a bunch of kids and somehow managing to survive.

Gwen’s character was the worst for me, she was unlike typical teenager which is a good thing but instead of being a little childish and still liking cartoons or something she seemed to repress growing up. I know she was fighting her adventurous side but she should have tried harder to get her little sister home soon. She is 16, she should know right from wrong, she didn’t seem to question the things she should have at that age like hygiene, or the fact the young kids were threatening to kill her and her little sister didn’t seem bothered.

As you can guess I will not be continuing with this series. But since so many people like this book I would suggest to check out other reviews before making your mind up, I am seem to be one of the very few that didn’t enjoy it.

Review: Apprentice (Black Mage #2)

Apprentice

She survived a trial year at the Academy, but that was just the easy part…

Now sixteen-year-old Ryiah is an apprentice of Combat, her school’s most notorious faction of magic. When she finishes she will be a mage, but in order to do so she has to survive four years with a training master she hates and her old nemesis, Priscilla. To make matters worse the unwanted attraction Ry feels for her sometimes-friend-sometimes-rival Prince Darren is at an all time high – even though he is betrothed to the very girl she can’t stand.

Really, the only bright spot to Ryiah’s new life is the time she spends with her friends, including an older apprentice named Ian, who she finds herself thinking about quite often.

Just when things start to get comfortable they take a turn for the worse. An apprentice is killed in a rebel attack and several mages end up dead. Unwittingly, the apprentices find themselves in the midst of a budding unrest between Jerar and its northern neighbor, Caltoth. For Ryiah the impending conflict means many things, but as her apprenticeship draws to a close she finds her biggest problem at home.

Unfortunately for her, Darren’s not going anywhere.

I loved the first book in this series, unfortunately this one wasn’t quite as good. Don’t get me wrong it was still a good book and I enjoyed it, but it lacked the oomph of the first one.

The Good

The characters were much the same, there were a few new ones which is good. I liked the growth in the characters. Ella and Alex’s relationship took a new level and it was great to see Ry and Ella continue their strong friendship. Getting to know Ian, Eve and Priscilla more. Especially Priscilla, it was interesting to see another side of her, okay her motivations were not always great but she felt a lot more human, rather than someone who sneered at Ry every time she saw her.

We also saw the great and horrible sides of Darren (we already saw the good and bad, but these were extremes). The extremes brought out good reactions in the other characters, especially Ry and Alex.

The mock battles were interesting, although at certain points I wanted a little explanation.

The ending was great. I am very much looking forward to reading the next book.

The Bad

Ry and Darren’s relationship jumped from good to bad so many times it gave me whiplash, why couldn’t they just make up or break up, I am sure some people will like the drama of it, but it was a little too much for me. I also did not like the way Ry treated Ian, he may not be my favourite character but I did not want him to be treated like that, it made Ry a lot less likeable.

I also really didn’t like how the time jumps were not explained well. This book lasted four years, a long time for one book, but the different years of study were not explained very well. Most of the time I had to work out myself that it was another year of study. Ian was often described by which year of study was in, this was often how I worked out it had jumped some time since he was a year above Ry, but it did get annoying, why not just call him Ian instead of the third year, fourth year or fifth year or even the curly haired ….. year. In conversations people often referred to Ry as the red haired girl or beauty. I am not sure about you but I don’t comment on peoples appearance during conversation with them.

I thought there was going to be a little more battles, proper battles, the action was lacking a little.

Overall

I enjoyed it but not as much as the first book but I am very much looking forward to the next book.

If you enjoyed the first one I do recommend this one if you keep an open mind.
