The idea is to write a short paragraph or two on what you see in the picture, take some inspiration from it and write about any genre you want. Post your short story in the comments and let us all read them. This is not a competition, just a way for people to let their creative side out. Hopefully this will be on once a week.

You can write any genre you want, it doesn’t have to be a masterpiece, as long as it’s your own work. The idea is to have fun and share in each others creativity.

I do not own any rights to the picture, it’s use is solely for inspiration purposes.

My Contribution

A young boy stood on his dads fishing boat as the whole sky was set on fire. The volcano above their village was erupting for the first time in hundreds of years, just like the shaman said. The elders hadn’t listened, they said it wasn’t going to happen and banished the shaman for fear mongering.

His dad had believed the shaman and his boy out to sea to wait it out. From their vantage point in the sea, they could sea that the glowing lava was destroying the whole village, their screams were thick in the air. Their whole village gone in an instant. His dad just kept in sailing.

Your turn, what comes to mind when you see this picture?

This is hosted by the Broke and the Bookish. This weeks theme is Books set outside of the US. I love the idea, I will read a book no matter where it’s set so looking forward to doing this one.

  1. forbidden territoryThis book is a guilty pleasure of mine, it’s sweet, got a little danger in it and it’s set in Australia.
  2. tangled websA book set in London, I found it sweet and interesting. I LOVE the cover, so simple yet so eye catching.
  3. lions in the garden This book was a little outside of my comfort zone but I really enjoyed it. It’s set in Bohemia which we now know as Czech Republic. Well worth the read.
  4. heart of ice This very unique book is set in Iceland, I only gave it three stars because there was too much romance in it for me. But the rest was really good.
  5. silkThis book is set in London just before Jack the Ripper, really interesting read. My main complaint was that it said it was about Jack the Ripper but it wasn’t it was set a few months before and he was only mentioned at the end, other than that a really great read.
  6. worlds of ink and shadow This book is set in Yorkshire, I haven’t yet finished it but it’s a really interesting read the Bronte siblings. Very different than anything else I have read.
  7. doon This is another book that I haven’t yet finished but really enjoyed the start, it’s set in Scotland.
  8. the silver witch This book is set in Wales and was a very great recent read. I loved how it switched time lines and the suspense was amazing.
  9. the silent ones Another book set in England. A thriller that kept me guessing until the end.

ARC Review: Revenge is Sweet: DNF

revenge is sweet

Hell hath no fury like a vampire seeking revenge …
Life hasn’t been exactly normal for Ellie since she became a vampire. Although joining the legion of the undead was always going to take some getting used to, even if you are the partner of Will Austen, the Elder of London.

But when Daniel, a fifteen-year-old fledgling vampire, unexpectedly turns up at Ellie’s and Will’s Highgate home, things start getting very strange – and more than a little scary.

Events take a devastating turn as a mystery troublemaker leaves behind a trail of carnage – and it soon becomes clear they will stop at nothing to get the Elder’s attention, even if it involves hurting the person he cherishes the most …

But when it comes to Ellie, Will Austen is the wrong vampire to mess with.

I received a free copy of this book via netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

First off I did not know this book was a sequel, I did my research, I checked on goodreads and it said it was stand alone, so I requested it. Turns out it’s the second in the series. I decided to see if I could make sense of it and I could there was enough description in it to leave me more than enough knowledge as to what happened in the last book.

I only managed to get about 20% the way through this book, I decided that was enough otherwise I was going to put myself into a reading slump. (May happen anyway the new book I have just started is almost as bad).

I found this book very dry and the characters very dry. The storyline was fin but it lacked any oomph, the parts of the about the vampires either felt like I was reading from a text book or it was just cliched or trying very hard to make it not a cliche.

I did not like the relationship between Ellie and Will it seemed a little like the author was trying to fifty shades of grey and mix vampires in. Will was a very hot and cold character and I often cannot relate to characters like that. I know people change their moods but this was too often too quick.

Overall I did not think this book was or me. I will not be rating since I did not get past 50%.

This is a similar feature that I used to see people doing, but haven’t seen it for a while and I miss it. So I am going to start doing it, hope you don’t mind, if you still do it let me know and I will stop and use yours.

Anyway, the idea is to write a short paragraph or two on what you see in the picture, take some inspiration from it and write about any genre you want. Post your short story in the comments and let us all read them. This is not a competition, just a way for people to let their creative side out. Hopefully this will be on once a week.

Boldt-Castle

My contribution.

The weary Knight trudged the last leg to the castle. It was within sight but looked so far away, he had been traveling without rest for almost two days. He and his platoon had finally killed the evil witch that was tormenting their land, but unfortunately he was the only one that survived. Somehow he was immune to her magic that she had released with her dying breath. She cast a spell on his fellow comrades and they bludgeoned each other to death, he could do nothing but save his own skin.

The castle was a welcome sight, it was small but it was home, just on the edge of the sea, it was easy to defend . His wife and child were waiting inside, yes he was home.

So your turn, doesn’t have to be a a piece of literature  (just look at mine) just needs to be your own work, I am sure you are a better writer than you think, you are your harshest critic after all.

I do not own any writes to the picture, it’s use is for inspiration purposes only.

Friday Faceoff: Lady in Red

Here we are again with the Friday Face Off meme being hosted by Books by Proxy .   This is a great opportunity to feature some of your favourite book covers.  The rules are fairly simple and can be found here.  Each week, following a predetermined theme choose a book, compare a couple of the different covers available for that particular book and choose your favourite.  This is the first of me doing this, hopefully, it’ll be become a regular feature here.  This week the theme is:

Lady in Red

A cover which features a female character in red

poison study redpoison study

There are many cover for these books, I do love the one with the red dress, the castle looks ancient and gorgeous, but I since the purple one is the one I have, I have a special place for it in my heart.

Which one do you prefer?

Which cover comes to mind when you think of red dress?

ARC Review: Dark Heart of Magic (Black Blade #2)

dark heart of magic

Something Wicked This Way Comes…

As a thief, I stick to the shadows as much as possible. But when the head of the Sinclair Family picks me to compete in the Tournament of Blades, there’s no escaping the spotlight—or the danger.

Even though he’s my competition, Devon Sinclair thinks I have the best shot at winning what’s supposed to be a friendly contest. But when the competitors start having mysterious “accidents,” it looks like someone will do anything to win—no matter who they hurt.

As if I didn’t have enough to worry about, mobster Victor Draconi is plotting against Devon and the rest of my friends, and someone’s going around Cloudburst Falls murdering monsters. One thing’s for sure. Sometimes, humans can be more monstrous than anything else…

I received a free copy of this book via netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

I got into this book much quicker than the first, I already loved the characters and the setting, but I was a little unsure as to where this could go at the beginning but ended up loving it. I loved how there was a couple of new characters but not too many and we got to see the older ones that I knew and loved. Vance was an interesting character, he was on the good side (or what I like to think of as the good side) yet he was still an ass.

I loved how the Victor Draconi issue was there but it wasn’t the focus of the story, the tournament took center stage, it gave the book more depth which I love in books.

The storyline was great and kept me guessing as to how it was all going to turn out, I did guess what was happening to the monsters pretty early on but I wouldn’t exactly say it was predictable. There was still parts I couldn’t guess at.

I didn’t really like how Lila, Devon and Felix always seemed to be there where trouble started or had just been, seems a little to coincidental.

I am very much looking forward to the third book, I think it’s going to be super exciting and full of action.

4 out of 5 stars
