Every generation on the island of Fennbirn, a set of triplets is born: three queens, all equal heirs to the crown and each possessor of a coveted magic. Mirabella is a fierce elemental, able to spark hungry flames or vicious storms at the snap of her fingers. Katharine is a poisoner, one who can ingest the deadliest poisons without so much as a stomachache. Arsinoe, a naturalist, is said to have the ability to bloom the reddest rose and control the fiercest of lions.
But becoming the Queen Crowned isn’t solely a matter of royal birth. Each sister has to fight for it. And it’s not just a game of win or lose…it’s life or death. The night the sisters turn sixteen, the battle begins. The last queen standing gets the crown.
I have seen a lot of reviews about this book, most seem to have struggled with the first 80% of this book. As did I. It has such a great premise I cannot help but get drawn in. But the story falls a little flat, there isn’t too much to it and it’s easy to put down and not want to pick up again. Since each of the queens had their own POV and they each had similar people in their lives it was quite easy to get mixed up at times. Especially between Luke and Luca, although Luca is female, I felt her character was very interchangeable with Luke’s.
I felt like we did not get to know enough about the island and the mainland, there were a few references, but I often felt like I only knew half the story, half the history that I should have to make sense of it.
I also thought that the first book would cover the whole fight to the death but it barely scratched the surface. I am hoping the next book in the series will be much quicker paced and full of action.
The last 20% was amazing, if the whole book was the same pace, it would have been one of the best books I have ever read. If the last part had not been so good I am not sure I would ahve even given it 3 stars, but as it is, I gave it 4.
I do recommend this book, it does have it’s good points and hopefully the series will pick up.
