Reread Review: An Average Curse

an average curse

Flynn Hawthorn is tired of disappointing her mother. Being born “the child of prophecy” is an unwanted burden, but the worst part is that she will never be able to fulfill her destiny without the magick of her ancestors. In a land filled with magick, Flynn is cursed to live her life as a Watcher—born into power, but unable to wield it.

As the ninth daughter of the ninth daughter it is Flynn’s birthright to inherit the wand of the High Priestess, reunite the damaged halves of the Book of Shadow and Light, and return balance to her world.

Dark forces oppose her purpose and as the threat from the Shadow Coven of Southeil touches her shores for the first time in generations, Flynn and her best friend Hazel are the only ones who believe something is wrong.

Flynn wants to impress her mother and solve the problem on her own, but if she fails, her people will be enslaved by dark magick and the Shadow Witch will destroy the Book of Light—forever.

Original review

I really liked the world this story was set in, it was different, well set up and easy to follow. The characters were fun an inviting. I loved the way magic worked in this world I always wanted to know more, no matter how much was revealed.

Flynn was a great main character, she knew of magic but she was still learning, so it had a great mix of learning with the main character and the character thinking about what they knew. The friendships were a main part of plot and there was a mix of good relationships and ones that are not so great.

There was some good plot twists which kept me guessing and I am looking forward to seeing what is going to happen next in the second book in the series.

There were a few parts that didn’t make sense, but it has been updated since I read it, I didn’t have time to reread it so maybe they were sorted but not sure.

New thoughts

Flynn and Hazel are young I know but they really do not think about the consequences. Hazel is meant to be quite smart but some of the things she does is silly. I still really enjoyed this book, great for younger readers, it’s full od depth and fun. Older readers like myself might probe too much.
