Where was the Boy Who Lived?

Harry

I am doing a marathon of the Harry Potter movies whilst I catch up on reviews and housework. And I put the first one on and realised something.

Dumbledore says “There won’t be a child in our world who doesn’t know his name”. So where does everyone in the magical world think he is? They all seem to know what happened in the Potter’s house and what possible theories about Voldemort. So do they all think Harry has gone to live with his grandparents? I assume since he went to his aunt, that Lily’s mum and dad are dead, but what abut James’s parents?

Did the ministry of magic know where he is? Or did Dumbledore not tell them because he believed Voldemort would come back?

When Harry and Hagrid get to the pub and someone recognises Harry, it goes silent and he is welcomed back. So maybe they did know he was in hiding, not just where. I wonder if any death eaters tried to find him, wouldn’t they want to kill the person they believed to have caused the demise of their leader.

Where do you think  everyone thought he was?

What happened to the Dursley’s after the 7th book?

the dursleys

We know that Dudley meets up with Harry sometimes for the sake of their kids, let’s be honest they practically grew up brothers even if they did not get on. So my theory which was the reason I started this post is out the window before I even start, my theory was they got their memories wiped since it is doubtful that Harry would visit them. Oh well.

What do you think happened to them? Did they move back to Privet Drive, or go somewhere new and start again? Other than Dudley did they ever see Harry again? Do they still hate magic? Or has at least Dudley realised that Harry is not the enemy?

I like to think they softened a little towards him and saw him every few years at least. What do you think?

The Evilness of Umbridge

umbridge

We all know Umbridge is evil, that goes without saying, she made children write with their own blood, even tried to use an unforgivable curse on Harry. But it wasn’t until recently I realised just how evil she.

One of the first times we are introduced to her is in the court room where Harry is tried for underage magic. But it isn’t until alter on in the book that we find out just how horrible she is.

I cannot remember if it’s in the Order of the Phoenix or a later book that we find out that she sent the dementors to little Whinging. I am not sure why but I always assumed that she did it to get Harry expelled. But then I started thinking, not many people knew that Harry could produce a patronous, since it is not normally taught until later years or not at all.

So baring in mind that she probably didn’t know he could produce a protonous since at the court most people were shocked, her intent must have been to suck out his soul, a fate worse than death.

Now that is just cold, trying to kill someone for saying something you do not want them to. That puts her at the same evilness as Voldemort for me, at least he never hid it.

I wonder what happened to her after the downfall of Voldemort. She couldn’t still be working at the Ministry, Kingsley probably wouldn’t let her, so where did she go?

What do you think her fate was?

Underestimating Harry

Harry

Beware spoilers of all the Harry Potter books ahead.

So in most of the books, all the adults good and bad underestimate Harry, time and time again. They think he is just a child and that they know much more than him. The only ones that don’t underestimate him are Dumbledore and Sirius.

Sirius wants his friend James back, and possibly remembers all the stuff they got up to when at Hogwarts themselves. He sees Harry as more a friend than someone still new to magic.

Dumbledore see the good in everyone and only really stops Harry from doing things because he wants Harry to have a proper childhood.

Everyone else just acts like he doesn’t know enough to be of use, most do it out of love and I suppose that kids generally could not help out most of the situations. BUt he kept proving himself from a young age and they still weren’t taking him seriously. Voldemort severely underestimates him time and time again, not just for his magic skills but his guile, loyalty and sheer luck.

But in the 7th book, Bellatrix gets her wand stolen by Harry. Then informs Gringotts that imposters might be arriving (although that is only speculated at). So people are finally starting to Harry seriously , or is it just because Hermione was there, people stopped underestimating her very quickly. Or was Bellatrix just covering all bases, making sure nothing went wrong. Or did Snape (or someone else) tell the death eaters that Hermione, Harry and Ron have made polyjuice potion. Since it takes a month to brew, it must have taken some time to sort out all the details.  Snape suspected them, and Dumble doesn’t miss much so he probably told them.

My point is that maybe just maybe near the end people were finally taking him seriously. By everyone except Voldemort of course, people kept offering to help him but he would not listen to them, underestimating Harry cost Voldemort his life.

Did Horace Slughorn Carry Around Felix Felicis all the Time?

horace slughorn

Having just finished the sixth book for the umpteenth (possibly millionth) time, (I really do love this series). At a certain point I was left wondering about a certain aspect of the book.  Please do not read farther if you have not yet watched the sixth film or read the sixth book.

As we all know in the beginning of the sixth book Professor Slughorn gives the potion Felix Felicis as a prize for the best draught of living death. And of course Harry wins. Well later in this book Harry, Hermione and Ron look up this potion to see if they could brew some for their selves. They find out it takes sixth months to brew. Since Slughorn only agreed to come back to Hogwarts, at most 6weeks before this class he would not have had time to brew any. This leads me to the question does he then carry some around? He admitted he only taken some twice in his life, so possibly he keeps as a memento.

Professor Slughorn is also very cautious and worried about being taken by the death eaters, so it is a possibility that he kept some in case he needed to escape them. Would be a good plan, he takes some just before he is captured and the luck is on his side so he can make his getaway.

If this was the case, why did he give up his stash? Does he have more hidden away? Or does he truly feel safe in Hogwarts, that he feels confident that he will no longer need it?

Why do you think he had a small vile and then gave it away?

Ron Weasley Lied!!! -Bad Wizards in Harry Potter

Do you remember at the start of the first film that Ron tells Harry that “There’s not a witch or wizard gone bad that wasn’t in Slytherin”?

I am currently watching the film, I started thinking if it was still true after the this was said then realised it wasn’t true to begin with. Everyone thinks that Sirius Black killed Peter Pettigrew and about 12 muggles and got himself sent to Azkaban, that’s pretty bad in my view. He is also classed as one of you know who’s biggest followers.

iPhone, Blackberry, wallpaper, 480, 320, pixels, high, vertical

If you do not remember Sirius Black was actually in Gryffindor. Making Ron’s statement false. Although Sirius did not actually commit the crimes to was convicted of, his friend Peter Pettigrew was, who was also in Gryffindor. Peter was instrumental in bringing Voldemort back to power.

Peter-Pettigrew

Was Peter Pettigrew the only death eater not in Slytherin? I do not know but it seems unlikely, the amount there seems to be, they cannot all be from one house. I am currently rereading the books so if I find any more I will be sure to do another post.

Review: Quidditch Through the Ages

quidditch through the ages

Did you know that: there are 700 ways of committing a foul in Quidditch? The game first began to evolve on Queerditch Marsh – What Bumphing is? That Puddlemere United is oldest team in the Britain and Ireland league (founded 1163). All this information and much more could be yours once you have read this book: this is all you could ever need to know about the history, the rules – and the breaking of the rules – of the noble wizarding sport of Quidditch.

I love the introduction and all the little snippets by Dumbledore. I found the information fun and very interesting. To read this book and for it to make sense and be interesting you have to be a Harry Potter fan but that’s to be expected. It was a fun read and since it all goes to charity, which makes it all the better. It is about 100 pages long, a quick read but a must for any Harry Potter fan.

What’s behind the veil?

Remember in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, in the department of mysteries, all the youngsters go into a room and Harry and Luna can hear voices coming from an empty arch? That’s the veil.

Harry_Potter_and_the_Order_of_the_Phoenix_2788

What exactly is it, we never find out. Two members can hear voices from it, (can Neville?, I cannot remember). Is it a coincidence that they are also the ones that can see the Threstrals, so they have seen someone die? Is a portal to life after death?

Oh I forgot to mention that when Sirius died he fell through the veil and disappeared. So what’s on the other side? Life after death? Heaven? Trapped souls? What are the voices? People who have died,  is the reason Harry and Luna can hear the voices, is because the voices are people they know. The others (as far as we know) have had no family members die.

I just found a source saying that it is a barrier between the land of the living and the land of the dead, but it is a one way trip. (Do not remember that being said). The adults do know that Sirius cannot come back. Maybe I should have thought more about this.

Why is there though? Just to keep people from going into it, or for more sinister reasons? Apparently J.K. Rowling has said that it has been there as long as the ministry itself, did they build the ministry around it then to protect it or have control of it.

So the question now is, is there anything beyond there? Were people standing on the other side?

Time for another read to see if I can think of more.

Until next time, night bookworms.

The Magic Of Harry Potter

26 Friday Jul 2013

Posted by bookgeeking in Harry Potter

Where does the magic of Harry Potter come from? I do not mean the spells and actual magic, I mean what makes it so popular? What makes millions of readers always coming back for more? A lot of books have good writing, they also have great characters (both good and bad), good story lines too so why is Harry Potter a nation favourite?

This can never be known for sure, because it is most likely different for everyone, but for me it’s because, the world is so full, and by that I mean everything is explained and no gaps. We also go on a ride with Harry, we learn along with him, he knows nothing of the magical world before the books, so anything he learns we do too. It’s carried out really well, there are no bits where the reader is wondering what’s going on, yet there is still wonder and excitement. It’s a very fine line and J.K. Rowling pulled it of with flying colours.

No matter how many times I read the books, there is always something new I learn, no matter how small it is, it’s still really exciting. I also liked very much how the books grew with the readers, they got darker and they went along. It was also like they were growing with characters, as they got older, the tasks and what they faced got harder, and with worse consequences.

Now here’s the big question. Can it be done again? Can someone (or J.K. Rowling) write another series that is just as good and will capture as many hearts? If so who and when? Will it be Rowling? Will it be you? Or will it be me?

Until next time bookworms

Neville Longbottom – The Chosen One

19 Friday Jul 2013

Posted by bookgeeking in Harry Potter

As everyone knows Harry Potter is the chosen one, he was the one that had to kill Voldemort and save the world. As people who have read the book will know is that there was a prophecy about this ;

“The one with the power to vanquish the Dark Lord approaches… Born to those who have thrice defied him, born as the seventh month dies… and the Dark Lord will mark him as his equal, but he will have power the Dark Lord knows not… and either must die at the hand of the other for neither can live while the other survives… the one with the power to vanquish the Dark Lord will be born as the seventh month dies…” Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix by J.K. Rowling.

The prophecy was said by Professor Trelawny to Professor Dumbledore, and Snape overheard the first half and told Voldemort which is why he killed Harry’s parents and tried to kill him. Only readers will know that in the fifth book when Dumbledore tells Harry this that he also reveals that the prophecy could have also been about Neville Longbottom, he fits it perfectly, it was only Harry because Voldemort tried to kill him, thus marking him as his equal. Dumbledore does say that he thinks it was always about Harry.

Would things have been different if Voldemort had tried to kill Neville? Would it be him to save the world, would he have had the bravery and skill? Or was he always meant to be where he is, on the sidelines.

Had Voldemort chosen Neville, it would be Neville sitting opposite Harry bearing the lightning-shaped scar and the weight of the prophecy. . . . Or would it? Would Neville’s mother have died to save him, as Lily had died for Harry? Surely she would. . . . But what if she had been unable to stand between her son and Voldemort? Would there then have been no “Chosen One” at all? An empty seat where Neville now sat and a scarless Harry who would have been kissed good-bye by his own mother, not Ron’s? Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince.

I think Neville would have made a good hero, he is kind to all and does save his friends, he is the one to kill the snake when he thinks Harry is dead. He is overlooked at a lot, less so in the later books, but no-one believes he can help, Harry does trust him before he goes into the forest, to finish what he could not finish.

Now I have only thought a little about this, but here is an article called Neville Longbottom – the Other Chosen One. It made me really think about how much thought Rowling into every little detail. I commend this reader for the article and how much thought they have put into.

I am off to find a book to read for the night. Night bookworms.
