The Evilness of Umbridge

We all know Umbridge is evil, that goes without saying, she made children write with their own blood, even tried to use an unforgivable curse on Harry. But it wasn’t until recently I realised just how evil she.

One of the first times we are introduced to her is in the court room where Harry is tried for underage magic. But it isn’t until alter on in the book that we find out just how horrible she is.

I cannot remember if it’s in the Order of the Phoenix or a later book that we find out that she sent the dementors to little Whinging. I am not sure why but I always assumed that she did it to get Harry expelled. But then I started thinking, not many people knew that Harry could produce a patronous, since it is not normally taught until later years or not at all.

So baring in mind that she probably didn’t know he could produce a protonous since at the court most people were shocked, her intent must have been to suck out his soul, a fate worse than death.

Now that is just cold, trying to kill someone for saying something you do not want them to. That puts her at the same evilness as Voldemort for me, at least he never hid it.

I wonder what happened to her after the downfall of Voldemort. She couldn’t still be working at the Ministry, Kingsley probably wouldn’t let her, so where did she go?

ARC Review: Princess of Tyrone

Apolline is happy hunting magical creatures on her pirate infested outer-perimeter planet. She is a fantastic shot, and doesn’t flinch at the blood and guts of her kills. Never once did she consider she could be the missing Princess of Tyrone.

All her life, she has heard the story of the Princess, cursed to sleep for eternity, unless her betrothed, the Prince of Oran, gave her true love’s kiss. Although Apolline knows she is betrothed, she thinks her fairy guardians arranged it out of ignorance of human ways. The thought she could be a princess is inconceivable.

Then Allard appears. Handsome, charming—but he’s not hers to have. He’s betrothed, too. Her guardians warn her against her new found friendship, but she and Allard meet in secret anyway. Despite her rough exterior, he sees beyond her gun-slinging bravado, and their love blossoms.

I found this book really interesting, I thought the space parts would put me off a little but they didn’t, they made the book more unique and quirky. I did find it strange how the planet that Apoline lived on, came off as a more of a small village rather than a planet. It sounded like everyone in the whole planet knew each other.

Apoline was spunky and a very strong female character who knew her own mind and tried not to let anyone tell her what to do.But she was a little dense sometimes, there were coincidences staring her in the face yet she didn’t put the pieces together. The book was very predictable, I worked out what was going to happen very early on. There were a few clever moments that I didn’t expect, which made me smile.

Allard was a good character but didn’t seem all that princely to me. Definitely not like someone who would soon be King, he took too many risks for that in my opinion. But I did think he was a nice Prince Charming, a little weak but you gotta give the Prince a break every once in a while.

The three fairies were interesting characters. I did get the dynamic of them wrong at first, the one who I thought was in charge wasn’t, it was one of the ones who seemed less domineering. I know they were only trying to protect Apoline but they should have trusted her more by her 20th year.

Other than being a little predictable and a few inconsistencies, I really enjoyed this book and will be reading more from this author, especially in this series. I did love how the author tied lots of fairytales together, it was nicely done.
