the snow queen

Five years ago, Cambridge Ballet’s Sugar Plum Fairy vanished after performing The Nutcracker. Despite extensive city and statewide searches, no traces of her, besides her ballet slippers, were ever found. Every year since, another member of the cast has gone missing after closing night: a Spanish Hot Chocolate, an Arabian Dancer, The Dew Drop Fairy, a Flower. Nieves Alba, who as a thirteen-year-old played Clara in the first ill-fated performance, is now cast as the Snow Queen. On closing night, every police officer in Boston surrounds the theater, determined to catch the perpetrator whom they’ve dubbed “The Nutcracker.” Can Nieves break the curse or will she be the next victim of America’s favorite ballet?

I have a paperback copy of this fantastic book to giveaway. Want a chance to win? Just enter the giveaway. Ends in 8 days time.

grim

Grim by a variety of authors.

Inspired by classic fairy tales, but with a dark and sinister twist, Grim contains short stories from some of the best voices in young adult literature today:

Ellen Hopkins
Amanda Hocking
Julie Kagawa
Claudia Gray
Rachel Hawkins
Kimberly Derting
Myra McEntire
Malinda Lo
Sarah Rees-Brennan
Jackson Pearce
Christine Johnson
Jeri Smith Ready
Shaun David Hutchinson
Saundra Mitchell
Sonia Gensler
Tessa Gratton
Jon Skrovan

I received a free copy of this book via netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

I really enjoyed this book, it had a lot of different takes on the fairy tales. Some were brilliant and truly inspired, some others did not hit the mark for me. None were terrible, just some were not for me and I only read them to get to the next one. I found the varying inspiration for the stories, time periods and settings really refreshing. I am only going to give a brief overview of 5 stories, I though 17 was too many. I tried to vary the stories as much as possible.

Overall 4 out of 5 stars.

The Twelfth Girl – Malinda Lo – This was a great story, a modern take on myths written in an enchanting way. I thought the modern setting was great, and there was enough mystery there to keep me satisfied.  5 out of 5 stars.

The Raven Princess – Jon Skovron – Nice message, really intriguing, loved the giants. Would love to see what the ravens find in the distant lands. 4 out of 5 stars.

Before the Rose Bloomed – Ellen Hopkins – It was okay. It did not flow well for me. I was left feeling slightly confused at times. 3 out of 5 stars.

Light it up – Kimberly Derting – Based on Hansel and Gretel. This story is set in modern times. It is brilliant. I loved how the writer got little bits of the original story in but still made it her own. 5 out of 5 stars.

Beauty and the Chad – Sarah Rees Brennan – Wow, what a story. It was fun, quirky and just down right amazing. My favourite of all the stories.

I would recommend this to anyone who likes fun exciting takes on fairytales.

She has written a number of romance novels including a few which are about dancing. I was lucky enough to get to review one such novel and she kindly agreed to do an interview and giveaway. Here’s the interview.

1. What made you want to be an author and what gives you inspiration?
I was an English major in college, and I always wanted to write a book. I get inspired by real life crime, celebrities’ stories, and literature.

2. When you are writing dance scenes, do imagine yourself doing the dance moves?
Yes! Sometimes I even choreograph the entire dance and try it out. My three-year-old son makes a great dancer partner.

3. Who is your favourite author and which author would you most like to read your books?
Great question! Hmm. Favorite dead author is Oscar Wilde. Living would be J.K Rowling. Most like to read my books: Anne Rice.

4. Where is your favourite place to write?
A coffee house. Lofty Coffee in Encinitas, California. My dream is to make a pilgrimage to Edinburg and write at Elephant House, where J.K. wrote Harry Potter. I have a painting of the café in my kitchen.

5. As you are a professional dancer, which is your true passion, writing or dancing?
Wow—these are so great and though provoking. Dancing. My soul is on fire when I dance. I miss it greatly. I did ballet from the time I was 3-19. And then Ballroom/Latin from 19-30. I love love love writing, but when that music plays and I put on my ballet or ballroom shoes, I am at peace.

6. Which of your characters is your favourite and why?
Hmm. Bret from Love Waltzes In because he is like my husband. From Snow Queen – it would be Mikhail. He’s misunderstood. He just wants to dance and have true love.

7. Do your characters change halfway through the book and have you ever had to go back and change certain parts?
Always. Yes. I write a horrible first draft. Then I go back and intensely edit my book.

8. What’s your ultimate goal with writing?
I want to write in many genres – YA, historical, Cozy mystery, paranormal, NA, romance. I hope that I can transport readers to a different world.

9. Do you become attached to your characters? And do you dislike writing about bad things happening to them?
Yes! I cry. My husband makes fun of me. He’ll say, “What’s wrong?” “It’s Nieves, she’s in trouble.” He will say, “Uhm you know she doesn’t exist, right?”

10. Have you ever written a character that you truly dislike?
Yes – the pimp in my new book, Invincible. But generally I try to have humanity for all of my characters, even the villains.

11. What’s the nicest comment/review from a fan you have ever gotten?
A nice lady on facebook wrote me the other day and said that she spent an entire day trying to find the first chapter of my book because she was obsessed with it. It made my day.

12. How long does it take you to write a book (roughly)?
I write fast. I can write an entire book in two weeks. Then edit it in two weeks.

13. Do you plan meticulously, or do a rough plan then start writing?
I plan but I never stick to it. My characters have minds of their own and don’t often do what I want them to.

14. Do you have trouble of letting your characters go, when you start another book/ series?
Yes. Which is why I plan series for all my books.

15. How many books do read a week and do read more than one at once?
I read a book a day usually. And yes I read more than one at once. Sometimes for pleasure and sometimes for research.

16. I saw on your blog that you are a coffee fan, is there any favourite types you like to drink whilst writing?
😀 Best question!!! I like to drink a non-fat Mexican Mocha. It has chocolate, cinnamon, chili powder, nutmeg and cayenne pepper. I get extra happy when they make the foam into a picture.

Alana I am proud to say that I can do that, I can make pictures in coffee, no foam, all from how I pour the coffee. Not perfect but getting there.

Would you like to know more about Alana? Why not head over to her blog and check it out 🙂 Here.

Ready for the giveaway? You can win a copy of The Snow Queen by Alana Albertson.

Review: Pretty Little Liars

22 Saturday Feb 2014

I was pretty ill over the last few days and wanted something nice and easy to read, without having to stop to review properly. I chose Pretty Little Liars by Sara Shepard. I have watched the T.V. series, so I knew the story, I just needed enjoy.

pretty little liars

Three years ago, Alison disappeared after a slumber party, not to be seen since. Her friends at the elite Pennsylvania school mourned her, but they also breathed secret sighs of relief. Each of them guarded a secret that only Alison had known. Now they have other dirty little secrets, secrets that could sink them in their gossip-hungry world. When each of them begins receiving anonymous emails and text messages, panic sets in. Are they being betrayed by some one in their circle? Worse yet: Is Alison back? A strong launch for a suspenseful series. (Synopsis from goodreads).

I really enjoyed the story so far, it was a little slower in plot than I expected but it was exciting, full of drama. Not quite sure I’d class it as YA because of all the drinking, drugs, murder and other issues it deals with. It’s a little over the top, but not so much so that it put me off.

4 out of 5 stars.

Okay, I am British but I did not act like that as teenager, I know some do drugs and things but thinking it’s okay to pursue your teacher is a little bit farfetched. It is a shame that they all lost contact and are not being true to themselves. I do look forward to finding out where each story takes us.

I have heard that the ending of the T.V. series is different from the book and I think I remember reading who A is in the books, but I do not know who killed Alison (if you find out). I am hoping in Flawless, the girls become friends again and you find out much more. I really do not like Mona, in the book she is quite mean and does not seem to care about Hanna.

Would I recommend this book? Yes I love it so far. I would say it’s for older teens that are not so susceptible to the idea of the only way to be popular is by being skinny and pretty and mean. Will be reading the second one soon.

ARC Review: The Purple Girl

the purple girl

The Purple Girl by Audrey Kane.

Caution!
Violet’s purple spreads to everything she touches…

Violet lives behind garden walls. Is she magical? Is she the devil’s child—or simply cursed? When the lonely thirteen-year-old embarks on a dangerous journey to find the one boy that dared to befriend her, she travels at night…in the dark…to keep people from seeing her purple skin.

But no one is more surprised than Violet when she unlocks her mysterious gift.

Although The Purple Girl was written as fun read to capture the imagination of middle grade readers, discrimination is at the core of the story…but so are possibilities, and they appear everywhere. (Synopsis from Goodreads).

I Received a free copy of this book via netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

I thought this book was fun and refreshing, it was aimed at younger readers and sent out a positive message whilst being thoroughly enjoyable. Violet was a great modest, young girl just trying to find her place in the world. She knows running away was wrong but felt like it was what she had to do. I was not a fan of Frankie, he seemed like bit of a mean person (trying to clean it polite since it is a kids book).

The setting was wonderful and the ending was my favourite part. It was so nice and left me smiling. I felt fulfilled by the story and was not left wanting. I would recommend this to anyone who wants a light story or wants a nice friendly book for their children.

The messages in this book were: be true to who you are, be nice to everyone no matter if they are different to you. Plus many more, but these were the ones that stood out to me.

Would I read more from this author? Yes.

4 out of 5 stars.

ARC Review: Dead Beautiful

dead beautiful

Dead Beautiful by Yvonne Woon.

After Renee Winters discovers her parents lying dead in California’s Redwood Forest in what appears to be a strange double murder, her grandfather sends her off to Gottfried Academy in Maine, a remote and mysterious high school dedicated to philosophy, “crude sciences,” and Latin: the Language of the Dead. It’s here she meets Dante, a dark and elusive student to whom she feels inexplicably drawn.
As they get to know each other better, Dante can’t seem to control his attraction either, and their desires gradually deepen into a complex and dangerous romance. Dangerous because Dante is hiding a frightening secret. A secret so terrible, it has him fearing for Renee’s life.
Dante’s not the only one with secrets, though. Turns out Gottfried Academy has a few of its own… Like, how come students keep disappearing? Why are the prefect-like Monitors creeping around campus during the night? And what exactly are the Headmistress and Professors really up to? Renee is determined to find out why.
Dead Beautiful is both a compelling romance and thought-provoking read, bringing shocking new meaning to life, death, love, and the nature of the soul. (Synopsis from goodreads).

I received a free copy of this book via Natgalley in exchange for an honest review.

General review (No spoilers)

When I first requested this I thought it looked like a nice book, it did not give away much from the synopsis, when I checked out some reviews on goodreads just before I started reading it, and I saw it shelved under a genre I do not read. (Big spoiler if I reveal). So I was a little bit unsure when I started but then I fell in love, there was always something at the back of my mind telling me, that soon it was going to come to a part I did not like, but it was carried out beautifully with masterful precision. It was clever and the author had obviously done her homework. I loved the setting. The school, had some strange rules but they were explained later on. The characters were interesting and apart from Nathanial, I felt like they grew throughout the book. As soon as I finished the book, I went a bought the second book in the series.

Favourite Quote –

“A hop, a swish, an arabesque, in an elaborate gentleman’s ballet.”

Favourite Scene

The seance.

5 out of 5 stars.

Step by Step Overview

0% – The plot reminds me a little of The Last Academy. I saw people have shelved it under “Zombies”, I hate zombies books, but let’s see what this is like.

10% – Nice writing style, mystery surrounding her parents deaths and how she knew where they were. Why did her parents and her grandfather have a fight that left them not speaking for years? I wonder who the school is for. Is it a school for zombies or zombie hunters?

20% – Let me guess Renee is going to start going out with the beautiful outcast. Twilight with zombies anyone? Dating is banned why? Why does she keep saying she will never go to her home town again, won’t she visit?

30% – Eating dirt? Ewwww, there are a lot of similarities between this book and Twilight. Dante is basically Edward and and Renee is Bella but less whiny.

40% – Is Eleanor going to go missing, the Latin society will be behind it. I don’t like it when girls drop their grades to impress a guy.

50% – What has Renee worked out? Is she going to find find out what actually happened to her parents? I’m guessing something happens when two students kiss, what about Renee’s parents though? So students all have different skills? I am really enjoying this so far.

60% – Is Dante slowly sucking the life out of her? Where is Eleanor and what happened to her?

70% – Someone really does not want them to find any information do they? The author is really good at creating suspense.

80% – Will she still want Dante? I like explanation about why the undead have an affinity for Latin? I am guessing Eleanor is one the undead now.

90% – Could Dante have Renee’s soul?

100% – I loved this book. The ending was unexpected and fabulous. I am looking forward to reading the next one and anything else this author writes.

Review: Stormbreaker

stormbreaker

Stormbreaker (Alex Rider Mission 1) by Anthony Horowitz.

They told him his uncle died in a car accident. Fourteen-year-old Alex knows that’s a lie, and the bullet holes in his uncle’s windshield confirm his suspicions. But nothing prepares him for the news that the uncle he always thought he knew was really a spy for MI6 Britain’s top secret intelligence agency. Recruited to find his uncle’s killers and complete his final mission, Alex suddenly finds himself caught in a deadly game of cat and mouse. (Synopsis from Goodreads).

General Overview (No spoilers)

I loved this film, watched it about 20 times, since I saw the film before the I read the book, does it live up to expectations? Yes. There was not that much variation from the film, but the characters were realistic and relatable. It was full of action but I liked how Alex always knew the danger and was not reckless, a good role model for younger readers. I am looking forward to reading the second book in the series. I want some of the gadgets he got, they would be so cool to play with, a yo-yo that could carry your weight, so cool and so clever.  I was glad there was no romance in it, just shows you don’t always need a love interest to be a great book.

4 stars out of 5.

Favourite Quote:

“Your never to young to die”

Okay so it’s the tagline to the book and movie, but it’s clever and shows how ruthless these people are.

Favourite Scene:

The one with the giant jellyfish – if you’ve read the book or watched the film you’ll know which one I mean.

Step by Step Overview (Spoilers)

0%- Since I have seen the film many times, I know the basic storyline, so hoping there’s enough to keep me entertained.

Page 20 – I am glad some of my favourite lines from the film are from the book, it makes me very happy.

Page 40 – I do like how it’s not exactly the same as the film. I have surprises to look forward to.

“No. The bank wouldn’t kill him. He didn’t even have an account there.” – I thought this line was genius.

Page 60 – That’s unfair, they are practically forcing him to be a spy. Blackmail is not the way to treat a 14 year old boy, even one who is mature for his age.

Page 80 – Flashback montage in a book – Anthony Horowitz I love you.

Page 100 – Kicking wolf out of plane made me smile. Herod Sayle is a bit of a creepy character. Adds to the story though.

Page 120- The only thing I am missing from this book is suspense and intrigue, but that’s my fault not the authors. Still really enjoying it though.

Page 140 – I loved the snooker part, it’s shows Sayle’s character well, he is a sore loser. Does Alex not find it odd that Sayle is upset about £4000, but is okay about giving away millions of pounds worth of computers free? Does it not make him suspicious?

Page 160 – Cheesewire and a flame thrower= Brilliant. I remember the ruin of the church from the film and find it very endearing – it gives beauty to a terrible situation.

Page 180 – I love the idea of Ian helping Alex from beyond the grave.

Page 200 – I was fooled for a second by Fraulein Vole, just for a second though.

Page 220 –I like that he is not willing to kill in cold blood. It shows he is a kind person.

Finish – What can I say? I loved it. It lived up to expectations.  Nice easy enjoyable read.

Who would I recommend it to?

Anyone who likes YA, spy mysteries and generally good books that are nice and clean.
