ARC Review: The Deep

Dark Photo of Blonde Woman with White Scarf at Stormy Sea

‘The world is never-ending.
I never realized just how much space there is – how far and wide the water around our island stretches out. Somewhere in the back of my mind, I may have believed that a second Wall ran around Tresco, containing the infinite waters so we wouldn’t all wash over the edge and plummet down into the depths.’

Leia and Walt are on their way to the Other Side, where the legendary land of Cornwall awaits them. Tony, their new friend, has told them that all wars of the past have been forgotten and the citizens of Bodmin and Dartmoor live in peace. People adhere to the tenets of an old religion that preaches forgiveness and non-violence.
However, Walt and Leia soon discover that even a peace-loving, ideal society like this one may have its flaws. While on a forbidden trip to Exeter, the old city of their ancestors, the two Islanders discover more about the new world than they ever bargained for.

Secrets run dark and passions run deep in this thrilling conclusion to the Island novella series.

I received a free copy from the author in exchange for an honest review.

I have read the first two books in the series and really enjoyed them. This one kept the momentum flowing. It was a while since I read the first two, it took me a while to remember exactly what happened. But once I had, I was in love with the story once again. This time the setting was Dartmoor, it was well done, and the writing was beautiful. The characters I know and love are back, with a few new ones, lots of exciting new places to explore. Leia and Walt managed to get themselves into more messes which they cleverly get themselves out of.

I liked all the different customs for the different places, a little too much religion for my liking, but that is personal preference. I read the whole book in a matter of hours, it flowed well and was a nice quick read.

There was not much description of how the world got into such a state, I wish there was more about that and the disease that is killing people. Other than those small things, which are just my opinions, I really enjoyed this book and the rest of the series. I would read them again and recommend them to anyone who likes dystopian books. I liked how the author sees good and bad in all of her characters and shows them in such a light.

Four out of Five stars.

Alana Albertson: Author Interview and Giveaway

alana albertson

Alana Albertson, is an American author who likes dogs, watching T.V. and watching T.V. She used to be a professional dancer and it shows, in how she writes dance scenes, the passion shines through. She has written a number of romance novels including a few which are about dancing. I was lucky enough to get to review one such novel and she kindly agreed to do an interview and giveaway. Here’s the interview.

1. What made you want to be an author and what gives you inspiration?
I was an English major in college, and I always wanted to write a book. I get inspired by real life crime, celebrities’ stories, and literature.

2. When you are writing dance scenes, do imagine yourself doing the dance moves?
Yes! Sometimes I even choreograph the entire dance and try it out. My three-year-old son makes a great dancer partner.

3. Who is your favourite author and which author would you most like to read your books?
Great question! Hmm. Favorite dead author is Oscar Wilde. Living would be J.K Rowling. Most like to read my books: Anne Rice.

4. Where is your favourite place to write?
A coffee house. Lofty Coffee in Encinitas, California. My dream is to make a pilgrimage to Edinburg and write at Elephant House, where J.K. wrote Harry Potter. I have a painting of the café in my kitchen.

5. As you are a professional dancer, which is your true passion, writing or dancing?
Wow—these are so great and though provoking. Dancing. My soul is on fire when I dance. I miss it greatly. I did ballet from the time I was 3-19. And then Ballroom/Latin from 19-30. I love love love writing, but when that music plays and I put on my ballet or ballroom shoes, I am at peace.

6. Which of your characters is your favourite and why?
Hmm. Bret from Love Waltzes In because he is like my husband. From Snow Queen – it would be Mikhail. He’s misunderstood. He just wants to dance and have true love.

7. Do your characters change halfway through the book and have you ever had to go back and change certain parts?
Always. Yes. I write a horrible first draft. Then I go back and intensely edit my book.

8. What’s your ultimate goal with writing?
I want to write in many genres – YA, historical, Cozy mystery, paranormal, NA, romance. I hope that I can transport readers to a different world.

9. Do you become attached to your characters? And do you dislike writing about bad things happening to them?
Yes! I cry. My husband makes fun of me. He’ll say, “What’s wrong?” “It’s Nieves, she’s in trouble.” He will say, “Uhm you know she doesn’t exist, right?”

10. Have you ever written a character that you truly dislike?
Yes – the pimp in my new book, Invincible. But generally I try to have humanity for all of my characters, even the villains.

11. What’s the nicest comment/review from a fan you have ever gotten?
A nice lady on facebook wrote me the other day and said that she spent an entire day trying to find the first chapter of my book because she was obsessed with it. It made my day.

12. How long does it take you to write a book (roughly)?
I write fast. I can write an entire book in two weeks. Then edit it in two weeks.

13. Do you plan meticulously, or do a rough plan then start writing?
I plan but I never stick to it. My characters have minds of their own and don’t often do what I want them to.

14. Do you have trouble of letting your characters go, when you start another book/ series?
Yes. Which is why I plan series for all my books.

15. How many books do read a week and do read more than one at once?
I read a book a day usually. And yes I read more than one at once. Sometimes for pleasure and sometimes for research.

16. I saw on your blog that you are a coffee fan, is there any favourite types you like to drink whilst writing?
😀 Best question!!! I like to drink a non-fat Mexican Mocha. It has chocolate, cinnamon, chili powder, nutmeg and cayenne pepper. I get extra happy when they make the foam into a picture.

Alana I am proud to say that I can do that, I can make pictures in coffee, no foam, all from how I pour the coffee. Not perfect but getting there.

Would you like to know more about Alana? Why not head over to her blog and check it out 🙂 Here.

(Synopsis from Goodreads).

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review via Netgalley.

General Overview (No Spoilers)

It was only 54 pages long so it was fast paced yet not rushed. The story flowed well, it was exciting and full of mystery and love, wrong choices and loyalty with an air of magic. There were a few holes in the story for me, but easy to overlook. I like the characters. I had a little trouble with that it was not until it stated her age that I realised that Nieves was at the start only 13, then during the main part of the book 18, she seemed older, it was a little disconcerting.

4 out of 5 stars

Step by Step Overview (Spoilers)

0% – I have never seen any ballet but always wanted to, they are graceful and beautiful, will that come off in the book? I like the idea of the book. It’s short so should be able to read it very quickly.

10% –  Wow, the writing is tiny, had to get my glasses out. Nice mystery to start, a lovely writing style. Itching to know what happened to Sveta.

20% – Jumped five years, lets she what happened. So far five years in a row one member of the Nutcracker cast has disappeared. If it was me, I would not be preforming, but it’s their passion, so maybe it’s worth it to them?  The titles of of each chapter are titled like a play (ballet as well I assume). Acts and Scenes.

30% – It’s a nice touch putting names of real ballet dancers in (okay I had to google them check) but if you knew about them would give more realism to the book.

40% – Is Misha behind all the attacks? Is it a wannabe ballet dancer?

50% – Dis Misha drug her? He is getting really suspicious now.

60% – Ahh, I think I know what is going on, somehow Misha has managed to shrink each of the dancers and put them in the snow globes.

70% – I am hoping for a twist here, will she end up with tough but sweet Evan?

80% – He got rid of the other snow globe that looked like Sveta? Is that why she suddenly turned up?

“I’ll teach you how to please me” – No decent guy says that.

90% – Will her and Evan be trapped in there forever? There’s a snow globe council?

100% – How did no-one else notice that each of the girls Misha dated went missing? And if Evan knew why did he not go to the police? Or at least tell the police where he was going so when he was reported missing they would know where to look. I did not really understand how they were meant to get out, and why Misha could dance in the globe? I enjoyed it, it was a thrilling magical story, with only a few creases that need ironed out.

Who would I recommend this book to?

Anyone who likes light  NA, there is a few fairly descriptive sex scenes, I do not really read NA much, and they did not bother me, so if you like the sound of a book about ballet, this is for you.

Review: Maelyn

maelyn

Maelyn (The Nine Princesses Novellas #1) by Anita Valle

Months later, the king returned home and presented his astonished queen with not one, but nine baby girls. “One from each kingdom I visited,” said the king. “They are orphans.” The queen wept joyously at the row of cradles, each bearing a sleeping infant. After bestowing a kiss on each child’s forehead she said, “Now they are princesses.”

Book 1: Maelyn was not born a princess. The king found her as a child, the lone survivor of a poor village slaughtered by the Red Fever. Suddenly she became a princess of Runa Realm, the first of nine orphans adopted by the king.

By her eighteenth year, Maelyn rules over Runa and a family of nine sisters. But some call the princesses frauds and imposters, a handful of urchins raised into royalty. Even Uncle Jarrod, the High King of Grunwold, seems determined to prove that Maelyn no longer deserves to be a princess. With a family losing faith in her, and a kingdom growing dangerously hostile, even Maelyn begins to wonder if she is truly a real princess. And if her riches will turn to rags once again…. (review from goodreads)

General Overview (No Spoilers)

This book was just under 100 pages, so a nice quick easy read. It was full of love, family, commitment and a little bit of mystery. I like stories about Princesses and this one had the Princess using common sense and a little initiative to win rather than fighting or magic, it was refreshing. I thought the book was predictable at the start but the author was leading me into a false sense of security and everything I thought was going to happen was turned on it’s head, was really enjoyable read.

4 stars out of 5.

Step by Step Overview (Spoilers)

0% – The idea that a King took in 9 orphans and loved them like his own, is a lovely idea. Usually Kings in fantasy are portrayed as evil or weak, this King seems neither. It is the first book of 9 by 9 sisters from 9 lands, there are so many possibilities for this series.

10% – The prologue is all about how Maelyn was adopted by the King, very quick overview but explains everything you need to know. I have never truly been bookless, sometimes I feel like I have nothing that I want to read, but I always have unread books waiting for me (thank goodness).

20% – So far the story is charming and still setting the scene.

30% – What possible reason could she have for dismissing every servant in the castle?

40% – Maleyn seems so kind and generous, perfect to rule a Kingdom, no request from her subjects is too small for her.

50% – Is she too going to fall for two people? Will she be marrying the Prince?

60% – Will she send one of her sisters or will she go herself, or find another way entirely.

70% – That cannot be a good thing that he is taking her there.

80% – Did she put something in the wine to mimic the Red Fever or does he really have it?

90% – Aww, that’s sweet, he wrote the books that he gave to her.

100% – Oh no, not a love triangle involving two sisters, please no.

Who would I recommend this book to?

Anyone who likes YA, Princesses, fairytales or just an enchanting read.

silver bells

Silver Bells by Sadie Hart

Every year, the Christmas Carousel in South Howle takes a beating, and every year, Dash Bartholomew tenderly brings it back to life. It’s a job he started fifteen years ago, when Dash became Dasher, one of Santa’s reindeer, and accepted the worn leather harness now hanging on the hooks at the back of the carousel barn. The one with its beautiful, silver bells that once made the most wondrous sound in the world, and now lay quiet.

That is, until Merry, a young, homeless woman wanders in looking for a place out of the cold. Unlike Dash, she can hear the sweet chimes of the bells, proving to him that it’s not the harness that’s broken. As Christmas draws near, Dash finds himself drawn to Merry and her quiet, stubborn pride. However, unable to hear the sleigh bells Dash isn’t sure what Christmas this year will bring, only that the magic in that harness is far less important than the woman he’s come to love.

Overview – Spoilers

I liked this book, it was a nice romance mixed with festive spirit. I liked the characters. It is only 24 pages long so it is faced paced. I would have preferred it a little longer, but that’s because I got attached to Dash, he was a good character. The idea of the bells, was amazing. It was so poetic and full of the Christmas spirit.

It is free on amazon for the kindle, it is worth the read.

4.5 stars out of 5.

saving rapunzel

Saving Rapunzel by Jamie Campbell

The witch of the tower has been portrayed as being mean and evil spirited for too long. Now it is time for her tell her side of the story.

While Rapunzel laments her imprisonment in a tower, the witch Thalia tries to convince her it’s for her own good. Afraid to go outside, Thalia fears the knights are coming to harm them.

When a persistent man continues to speak to Rapunzel, Thalia knows she must do something to stop him getting to her. With her hair growing longer, it will only be a matter of time before he can reach her.

Vowing to keep a promise she made sixteen years ago, Thalia makes a decision that could ruin the kingdom forever.

Revisit the charming tale of Rapunzel as told from the perspective of the witch who kept her captive.

General Overview (no spoilers)

I love the fairy tales retold series by Jamie Campbell, they are all short (less than 40 pages) but they bring a new perspective to the classic fairytale whilst staying true to the original, this one was probably my favourite out of the lot. I hope she writes more, they are a nice quick easy read.

5 out of 5 stars.

Step by step Overview (spoilers)

0% – I am a big fan of fairy tale retellings especially ones by Jamie Campbell. This one looks like it will be just as good as the rest. Rapunzel is not a story I am overly familiar with, I know the basics only, so this should be an interesting read.

25% – I love the writing style, it’s easy to read and flows easily. It is a short story, so it’s fast paced but I do not feel like I am missing out on any important details.

50% – I always thought Rapunzel had blonde hair, I like how she has red hair in this version, makes it seem less Disney, (I know Brave and Ariel have red hair, but still).

75% – It pains me to see this happen to Rapunzel (her hair being cut off). I do not know how the original story ends but I can guess how this one will end.

100% – Nice end, glad it is a happy ending for all. As I said I am a sucker for these stories and I want to keep on reading about these characters.

Killing Snow White (The fairytale retellings) By Jamie Campbell.

killing snow white

Synopsis from goodreads.

History is told from one person’s perspective. Sometimes they don’t get it right.

The queen has been portrayed as evil for too long. Now it is time for her to tell her side of the story.

The queen once had everything – a loving husband, a ready-made family, and the respect of everyone in the kingdom. Until the day the king died.

As Snow White tries to do everything in her power to hate her step-mother, the evil queen only has love for her. She has always wanted a daughter and was hoping their relationship could be salvaged.

Taken to the woods for her own sanity, Snow White does not hesitate in plotting against the evil queen to take her down.

While trying to continue her husband’s legacy, the queen will do everything in her power to act in the best interests of the kingdom. Even if that means killing Snow White.

Revisit the charming tale of Snow White as told from the perspective of the Evil Queen who allegedly poisoned her.

This is the second of these novellas I have read by Jamie Campbell and this was as charming as the first. I know the evil queen is meant to be evil but I like how every evil thing was explained as good, it was a nice change. I found it very believable. I found myself jumping ahead in my mind wanting to know how a certain part was going to be explained, it was clever and well written. All the characters that you know and love are there, just a little different.

The end, as I was getting further through I was wondering if any ending she could write would be feel right, well the ending we got was better than I could have ever imagined, I loved it, did not see it coming at all.

If you like Snow White this book is worth a shot.

Looking forward to reading the story of Rapunzel sometime soon. Until next time night bookworms.

Cinderella is Evil by Jamie Campbell.

cinderella is evil

Synopsis from goodreads

History is told from one person’s perspective. Sometimes they don’t get it right.

Ugly Stepsister Anna has wrongly been accused of being mean and evil. Now it is time she got the opportunity to tell her side of the story.

With Cinderella so perfect and wonderful, it is no wonder Anna feels ugly in comparison. Dealing with bullies, a grumpy mother and the death of her step-father, Anna is at her wits end.

When the Prince’s ball approaches, Anna is told she must find a husband to save the family fortune. Attending with her sisters, the sulky Prince Charming only has eyes for Cinderella.

With the burden of being the only one to unite her step-sister with the Prince, will Anna act as cupid? Or will she protect Cinderella from the arrogant Charming?

A charming twist to the story of Cinderella, told completely from the point of view of the Ugly Step-Sister.

The Good

This was a different POV than we are used to for Cinderella, it was written form one the Ugly Step-sisters point of view, but in this book everything she did for Cinderella was out of love and not out of hatred. Every story has two sides. It was short (30 pages), but it was charming. It was refreshing to see her know she is ugly, I wanted to go yell at the bullies.

I really liked how the author kept to the story of Cinderella as much as possible, it made it more magical, you already knew what was going to happen, but you were left wondering how we were going to get there. Very well written and in a fun way. I enjoyed it greatly. 5 out of 5 stars.

The Bad

My only complaint is that it is too short for my liking. I wanted more.

I do buy the next two books in the fairytale retelling series straight away.

Overall

A charming novella on Cinderella and her wicked ways.

Until next time, happy reading bookworms.
