netgalley challenge

This challenge is right up my alley. I struggle to keep up with Netgalley books no matter how good my intentions are. I have a few from near the start which is only a few a months ago, but I still feel like I am letting the publishers and authors down by not reading them sooner. I know I am not the only one, so I am choosing to better next year.   I am hoping this will help, even if I have a little set back for a week or two, I will have the rest of the year to catch up.

I will be attempting the Gold which is 50 Netgalley books.

If you fancy joining this great looking challenge just click the picture and it will open a new tab to the blog hosting this challenge.

Happy reading bookworms.

ARC Review: The Last Priestess

last priestessThe last priestess

The Last Priestess by Elizabeth Baxter.

There is a name that is uttered only in whispers. The Songmaker. A ruthless rebel mage, he is bringing civil war to the once-peaceful kingdom of Amaury, enveloping all in a tide of violence. For Maegwin, a tormented priestess, the path forward lies in forgiving her temple’s enemies—but she dreams only of revenge. For Rovann, a loyal mage haunted by his failures, salvation might be found in the unthinkable: defying the very king he swore to protect. If they are to succeed they must form an unlikely alliance. For someone must stand against the Songmaker. Someone must save Amaury from his dark designs. But first, they’ll have to learn to trust each other.

And so a magical fantasy of darkness and redemption begins. (Synopsis from Good reads).

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review via Netgalley.

General Overview (No Spoilers)

A nice book full of magic, war and even a little bit of love and loyalty. It reminded me of Maria V. Snyder’s stories, well written and exciting. I loved the characters, they had different sides and unwilling friendships were formed. The storyline is amazing. It kept me guessing all the way through. Maegwin was smart and strong, fights her own battles (literally), which I really admire about her. Leo was funny, a little eccentric, I would love to hear his songs, hoping they feature later in the series. I like how there was a hint of romance that might take a bigger role later in the story, but just now they are focusing on saving their country.

I bought the second book as soon as I had finished the first.

4 stars out of 5.

Step by Step Overview (Spoilers)

0%- Not a fan of the cover (the second picture showing), the redo is much nicer. But the story looks right up my alley. “And so a magical fantasy of darkness and redemption begins.” Sounds fantastic.

10% – Maegwin is sentenced to death for treachery and possibly treason. She stays fighting until the end, makes her seem likes  strong character.

” I would choose life and vengeance.” At this sentence I knew I was in for an action packed adventure.

So far so good. Really inviting story, two different sets of power, possibly wanting the same thing.

20% – This book is reminding me of Poison Study by Maria V. Snyder. A young girl gets a reprieve from a death sentence and has flashbacks of the murder that got her there in the first place. Rovann is turning out to be a mysterious fellow. What does he want with Maegwin? I like how Maegwin keeps her word to her goddess, she may have killed someone but breaking her word is worse.

30% – I think Rovann is the King’s Mage. And the plot thickens.

40% – The bad guys are planning to attack the Capitol when it is meant to be implementable, they must have something big up their sleeves. This is the second book I have read recently about Order and Chaos, I am really enjoying this concept. ( The first one was The Grove of the Sun).

50%- Is the one light meant to be Heaven? I like where this story is going.

60% – Where did Rovann disappear to? What happened to him? Is there going to be romance. The descriptions in this book are beautiful. It makes me wish it was a real place (minus the fighting).

70% – Is it all an illusion? Aww, poor Leo is he truly dead? Surely not.

80% – Traveling through the Eorthe sounds horrible but a crafty trick. I like that Maegwin doesn’t have all the answers and is starting to care for the troops.

90% – Yay, Leo may still be alive. I really like him as a character.

100% – She fled? I think she will be back. Nice ending, leaving lots of options for the next book in the series, which I have already bought.

might on monday

The idea behind Might on Monday is to say a book you have been thinking about for a while but have not gotten around to reading, but might on Monday.

This week I chose Magician

My boyfriend has been trying to get me to read it for about a year, but the word aliens scares me. He also does not really read the same books as me. So has anyone read it? Is it any good?

What would you read on Monday?

2014 button

The 2014 TBR Pile Reading Challenge is hosted by Evie @ Bookish.

Guidelines

  1. This challenge will run from Jan 1, 2014 – Dec 31, 2014.
  2. Anyone can enter! You don’t have to be a blogger, as long as you review the book you’ve read! (On your blog, Amazon, Random Buzzers or Goodreads/Shelfari!)
  3. Any genre, length or format of book counts, as long as it is a book that’s been sitting on your shelf for some time now. Short stories and novellas are OK, too! Only books released in 2013 and earlier! NO  2014 ARCs and 2014 fresh-off-the-press releases allowed!
  4. You can list your books in advance or just put them in a wrap-up post. If you list them, feel free to change them as the mood takes you.
  5. When you sign up in the linky, put the direct link to your post about joining the 2013 TBRPILE Reading Challenge. (If you don’t have a blog, post about it on Facebook or Tweet!)
  6. You can move up levels, but no moving down.
  7. Sign-ups will be open until Dec 15, 2014, so feel free to join at any time throughout the year.
  8. On the 20th of each month we will post a wrap-up post, here, on BOOKISH. Every wrap-up will have it’s unique theme, a mini-challenge, a giveaway and place for you to link up your reviews from this month. For each review you link up, you will get one entry in a drawing of one book of choice from Book Depository. It’s open to INTERNATIONALS. The giveaway will be open until the next wrap up post goes up! (i.e. the entire month)
  9. If you miss a wrap-up post + giveaway, you can link up your reviews next month. Do not, however, try to link up one review twice – we will be checking 😉
  10. December is a wrap-up for the whole year. All the book reviews you linked up January-November + the ones you’ll link up in December will be entered into a GRAND PRIZE giveaway.
  11. You don’t have to follow Bookish Blog to join the challenge, but you do have to follow us to be entered in giveaways!

Levels:

1-10 – A Firm Handshake
11-20 – A Friendly Hug
21-30 – First Kiss
31-40 – Sweet Summer Fling
41-50 – Could this be love?
50+ – Married With Children

Emma’s TBR Pile Challenge

I would love to be able to do 50+ but since you can move up and not down, I think I will go for 21-30 to start off with, it means I could still do ARCS from 2014 and reread some books I have been wanting to. I have almost 500 books on my kindle and quite a few in paperback, so doing a few from each will be good. Definitely need to do this challenge. Also I am not going to include any of my current ARC already released, since I am going to spend the next two weeks trying to read as many as possible. Will include some later.

Here’s a few of the books I will hopefully complete during this challenge. These may change as I read and my mood changes.

ARC Review: The Snow Queen

the snow queen

The Snow Queen by Alan Albertson

Five years ago, Cambridge Ballet’s Sugar Plum Fairy vanished after performing The Nutcracker. Despite extensive city and statewide searches, no traces of her, besides her ballet slippers, were ever found. Every year since, another member of the cast has gone missing after closing night: a Spanish Hot Chocolate, an Arabian Dancer, The Dew Drop Fairy, a Flower. Nieves Alba, who as a thirteen-year-old played Clara in the first ill-fated performance, is now cast as the Snow Queen. On closing night, every police officer in Boston surrounds the theater, determined to catch the perpetrator whom they’ve dubbed “The Nutcracker.” Can Nieves break the curse or will she be the next victim of America’s favorite ballet? (Synopsis from Goodreads).

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review via Netgalley.

General Overview (No Spoilers)

It was only 54 pages long so it was fast paced yet not rushed. The story flowed well, it was exciting and full of mystery and love, wrong choices and loyalty with an air of magic. There were a few holes in the story for me, but easy to overlook. I like the characters. I had a little trouble with that it was not until it stated her age that I realised that Nieves was at the start only 13, then during the main part of the book 18, she seemed older, it was a little disconcerting.

4 out of 5 stars

Step by Step Overview (Spoilers)

0% – I have never seen any ballet but always wanted to, they are graceful and beautiful, will that come off in the book? I like the idea of the book. It’s short so should be able to read it very quickly.

10% –  Wow, the writing is tiny, had to get my glasses out. Nice mystery to start, a lovely writing style. Itching to know what happened to Sveta.

20% – Jumped five years, lets she what happened. So far five years in a row one member of the Nutcracker cast has disappeared. If it was me, I would not be preforming, but it’s their passion, so maybe it’s worth it to them?  The titles of of each chapter are titled like a play (ballet as well I assume). Acts and Scenes.

30% – It’s a nice touch putting names of real ballet dancers in (okay I had to google them check) but if you knew about them would give more realism to the book.

40% – Is Misha behind all the attacks? Is it a wannabe ballet dancer?

50% – Dis Misha drug her? He is getting really suspicious now.

60% – Ahh, I think I know what is going on, somehow Misha has managed to shrink each of the dancers and put them in the snow globes.

70% – I am hoping for a twist here, will she end up with tough but sweet Evan?

80% – He got rid of the other snow globe that looked like Sveta? Is that why she suddenly turned up?

“I’ll teach you how to please me” – No decent guy says that.

90% – Will her and Evan be trapped in there forever? There’s a snow globe council?

100% – How did no-one else notice that each of the girls Misha dated went missing? And if Evan knew why did he not go to the police? Or at least tell the police where he was going so when he was reported missing they would know where to look. I did not really understand how they were meant to get out, and why Misha could dance in the globe? I enjoyed it, it was a thrilling magical story, with only a few creases that need ironed out.

Who would I recommend this book to?

Anyone who likes light  NA, there is a few fairly descriptive sex scenes, I do not really read NA much, and they did not bother me, so if you like the sound of a book about ballet, this is for you.

Review: The Last Academy

12 Thursday Dec 2013

the last academt

The Last Academy by Anne Applegate.

Curtis Sittenfeld’s PREP meets THE SIXTH SENSE in this spine-tingling, unforgettable debut.

Camden Fisher arrives at boarding school haunted by a falling-out with her best friend back home. But the manicured grounds of Lethe Academy are like nothing Cam has ever known. There are gorgeous, preppy boys wielding tennis rackets, and circles of girls with secrets to spare. Only . . . something is not quite right. One of Cam’s new friends mysteriously disappears, but the teachers don’t seem too concerned. Cam wakes up to strangers in her room, who then melt into the night. She is suddenly plagued by odd memories, and senses there might be something dark and terrible brewing. But what? The answer will leave Cam–and readers–stunned and breathless, in this thrilling debut novel. (Synopsis from Goodreads).

General Overview (No Spoilers)

First of all the cover is beautiful, it’s menacing yet inviting. It’s what drew me in despite a few bad reviews, it had a few good ones too, so thought it was worth a shot. When I started it, it was great, was enjoying the set up of the story. Then it just went no-where, they was strange goings-on but no explanation. A few things did not make sense. I was getting frustrated with it, not sure if I wanted to carry on. I had heard the ending was the worst part, but I hate not finishing books and I so wanted to love this, I carried on. I am glad I did, the ending was amazing. Almost everything made sense, it was such a intense ending that i could not look away, I was racing to the finish, soaking in every word. The end made the story great but the execution of the middle lacked for me. Also quite a few gaps in the plot. It was not bad just not great.

3 stars out of 5

Step by Step Overview (Spoilers)

0% – Sounds like a typical YA novel with a twist of the paranormal. I have heard some terrible reviews about this book, but also some good ones. It is expensive for the kindle for a debut author at £6.99, just hoping it’s worth it.

10% – Starts in a very typical YA style, for some reason a kid is sent to boarding school, in this case she is glad to go because she has fallen out with her best friend.

“The designs were abstract, with nothing that might look like a cross or as crescent or a star anywhere.” – I have no idea why this is in there, there is no mention of why she might suspect a star of or a crescent is there? It is about a chapel so I can understand the cross but the other two? It’s a little out of the blue.

“Her tone implied I had asked her to stick her finger in a pot of honey and go slap a bear.” –I had to reread this comment four times to make sure I had read it right, it’s funny and without a doubt, original.

So there’s a pervert on campus? It’s different at least for paranormal YA, but since it is YA there’s a very thin line and I hope it is not crossed.

“It came out sounding like what horses eat.” – This was odd for me, how else is it pronounced? It’s always said like that. Confused.

20%- Could Brynn’s absent roommate be the girl from the plane and did the landlord do something to her? So I am guessing Tamara can teleport or stop time or something. So far the story is fine but the details are a little messy. Also not a fan of Brynn.

30%- I think skinny butt is Mark. Honestly have no clue about what is going on, there is a strange room where some people hear voices and others see past hairstyles of the other people in the room? Huh?

40% – I still have no clue as to what is going on. Does that mean students are going missing? Is Jessie dead or missing or gone home?

50% – Could Alan be an ally or is he just a bully too? Has something happened to Mark? There has been no mention of him for a while?

60% – Eh? What on earth was that phone call about?

70% – Why is Mr Cooper telling her personal secrets about all the other teachers?

80% – I now think all the students are dead and the creepy guy gives them coins to “move on” when they are ready. That’s why their parents don’t want them phoning because they are haunting them. It’s a wild idea but would explain quite a few things. The more I read the more I am positive that I am right about that theory.  Maybe the random images Camden keeps seeing is how the other children died?

90% – I have actually been loving the last 10% or so, it’s much better written and things are making sense now. Did Camden die in the pool after her friend pushed her in?

100% – Lovely ending. Understand why certain things happened now. Was worth the read but the middle could do with some more work in my opinion. If the rest of the book had been as good as the ending it would have been 5 stars.

Who would I recommend this book to?

Anyone who likes YA paranormal. But does not mind filtering through a few things that do not quite make sense. The ending did make it worth it for me though.

This meme is hosted by the broke and the bookish. This weeks post of Winter reading list. I do not have many if any winter themed books, so I will just be stating ten books I plan to read over the next few months before Spring is sprung.  Choosing ten books only is going to be the challenge.

1. in falling snow

I found one with a winter theme so I thought I would give it a bash soon and be festive.

2. taste of darkness

I have this as an ARC, and it’s out at the end of this month so I probably start this very soon, looking forward to it. Loved the first two in the series.

3. the iron king

Been wanting to read this for a while but it was at the bottom of a very large pile, since the pile has now fallen it has been removed safely and put aside for reading very shortly.

4. the holders

Is there more to say than it looks great?

5. the madea complex

I saw this on someone else’s blog a while ago and decided that I had to read it.

6. ????????????????????

Fantasy and mystery, what more could I want?

7. new world order

I read the first three in the series a while and had to stop to read other books, cannot wait to pick this book back up again.

8. Romulus Buckle & the City of the Founders lg

Never read steampunk but it intrigues me greatly.

9. the selection

I have heard great things about this book, cannot wait to get started.

10. dragon defender

DRAGONS!!! 😀 😀

What books are you reading this winter? Have you read any of these are they any good?

might on monday

So late yet again. Better late than never I suppose.

Might on Monday is where you post a book you have seen that you are unsure about, and hopefully people will respond and tell you whether or not it’s worth the read.

This weeks book for me is.

les mis

A classic book, I have seen the remake of the film and loved it. But I have heard this is really hard going, also it’s almost 1500 pages long. That’s some book. Is it worth the read?

What book might you read on Monday?
